Race Summary
The Athletics Victoria XCR – Lakeside 10 was held in excellent winter running conditions, with clear skies, light winds and a temperature of around 12°C. It was almost perfect weather for racing.
From the start, I settled into a comfortable rhythm and the opening 5 kilometres felt controlled and relaxed. Looking back, I probably had more in reserve than I realised and could have pushed the pace a little harder during the first half of the race.
At the turnaround with approximately 2.5 kilometres remaining, I lifted the pace and finished strongly over the closing stages. After crossing the finish line, I recovered quickly and felt surprisingly good, which confirmed there was still more left in the tank.
My official time was 44:56, placing 16th in the Men’s 60–65 age group and 378th overall. While I was pleased with the strong finish, the biggest lesson from the day was that I need to trust my fitness and race with a little more confidence from the gun.
Although breaking 40 minutes for 10 kilometres is an ambitious goal, this race showed me that I’m moving in the right direction and gives me confidence as I continue preparing for the 2026 World Multisport Championships in Abu Dhabi.
Road to Abu Dhabi
Every race is another important step on my journey to the 2026 World Multisport Championships in Abu Dhabi.
The Lakeside 10 reinforced that my endurance and finishing strength are improving. The biggest lesson from this race was to trust my current fitness and be more prepared to race positively from the start. Finishing strongly while still feeling I had more to give provides confidence that my training is progressing in the right direction.
With several months of preparation still ahead, this race has provided another valuable building block towards achieving my best possible performance at the World Championships.
Key Takeaway
The biggest lesson from the Lakeside 10 wasn’t the finishing time—it was the confidence gained from the race. Finishing strongly while still feeling there was more left in the tank showed that my fitness is improving. Going forward, I need to trust my preparation, race with more confidence from the start, and continue building towards my goal of competing at my best in Abu Dhabi.
